Louisville Fire Station #2

This existing fire station required an addition of a 5,000 SF, five-bay apparatus garage. Due to site constraints, the Fire District opted for a “back-in” garage, thus requiring analysis of truck maneuverability onto the site and into the bays.

The critical design issues included lowering the new apparatus garage below the existing floor elevation to achieve a shallow sloped drive apron, the extension of an exterior covered path from the parking to the apparatus garage to provide exterior station access, a fire board room/community room allowing public access yet maintaining a secure operations side of the house, and the allowance for future dorm rooms. The latter was accomplished by establishing a new second floor in the existing high-bay apparatus garage, blending conveniently with the existing dorm rooms in the administrative portion of the building.
